Drag Baby

Dan, a misanthropic drag queen in his mid-thirties, only has one thing on his mind – to get on tv and become famous. That is until he’s visited by Sally, his only ever girlfriend who asks him to donate sperm so she and her now girlfriend can have a baby. As Dan grapples with the decision, the pair grow closer and have to confront their respective pasts and the reasons why they became estranged. Drag Baby is a tender play that infuses drag acts into the narrative, using comedy, dance and music to tell an intimate story about friendships, growing up, and how to create your own family as a queer person.

Drag Baby was developed with support from Arts Council England. It was performed at Kings Head Theatre on 17th and 18th April 2022.

It was revived for a three week run at the Pleasance Theatre in June 2024 to four and five star reviews.

Reviews for Drag Baby:

“Carroll’s characters are vividly crafted, infused with a refreshing amount of messiness that elevates the piece to a level of authenticity that is rarely achieved. There is no single character in Drag Baby who gets to be the sympathetic one, no individual who earns the audience’s favour and keeps it. And yet each, in their own manner, has a glimmer of truth so resonant that they hold at least a kernel of your goodwill.” ★★★★-Theatre and Tonic

“Welcome to the world of true drag-glitz and glamour, with an incredibly engaging storyline that pulled the audience in from start to finish. All thanks to the remarkable writing skills of Grace Carroll ” ★★★★★- Young(ish) Perspective

“The poignancy of the plot is beautifully paired with sharp and witty dialogue” - ★★★★-West End Best Friend

“Grace Carroll has written a terrific piece of theatre with ‘Drag Baby’. She has managed to create a contemporary piece of work that is conversational, realistic, witty and sometimes brutally honest. All her characters are heavily flawed and raw and sometimes quite unlikeable but that only adds to the sincerity of the piece, we all know people like this and yet we love them dearly.” ★★★★ ½-London Pub Theatres

“ A Fully formed, beautifully crafted story brought to the stage by an incredibly talented cast. ★★★★★ - LondonTheatre1
